Peter Pan detachable collar giveaway!

I decided to join up with the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day (which is amazing, so check it out!)

You may have remembered a recent post where I showed some of the lace collars I made (to clarify, the actual lace was machine made, but I had to sew it together and add hand crocheted cording- don't think I was awesome enough to make the lace!). Well, today, you can win one!

Get more out of your wardrobe by adding a detachable collar. This lace peter-pan collar features a delicate floral pattern. It has hand crocheted cords to tie in the back. A pearl-like button adorns the front.

Yep. I copied that from my Etsy listing (thus the flowery wording).

So, would you like to win?

Simply leave a comment telling me your ultimate vacation destination.

For a second entry, become a follower (or just leave a comment if you already are!)

For a third entry, you can "like" Verdant Bents on Facebook.

Please leave a separate comment for each. If your email address is not linked with your account, you must leave me a way to contact you!

This will be open until May 25 and winners will be announced shortly thereafter.

This is open internationally unless there is a law that prohibits. (believe it or not, it is (or was recently) illegal to ship "haberdashery" to Italy.) I'm not going to jail over this, people. :)

Ruffle skirt finally used

So, ironically, though the tutorial of this skirt has had many views, I have never worn it in public. Ever.

I finally did over a year after I made it.

Skirt: Made by me here.

This was at my uncle's wedding last weekend. It had the loveliest reception I think I have ever been to. A mutual friend has an amazing house and yard. Amazing. This picture was taken at the edge of a lovely field stone patio. If my dreams came true, I would one day have a place almost as nice as this one. So, the reception was there- all outdoors. The weather was perfect and super warm. The only downside was that it made me seriously lament NOT begging to have my reception there as well. Really, what was I thinking?!

My uncle and I

Our family photos are making progress, people! We finally have everyone's head in the right direction and 3/4 are looking at the camera. Seriously though, I love this picture. (Thank you, Sarah!!!!)

Cook eggs without having to scrub the frying pan!

Probably everyone already knows this, but it was news to me. Life changing news. I can't even tell you how many eggs we've eaten since finding this trick (think dozens in the last two months)

This is NOT an non-stick pan

I was sick of scrubbing nasty egg frying pans (I have done it the hard way for years) so I decided to Google a better way. I have no idea where I found it, but it is pretty common knowledge out there in the internet world. I combined a couple of ideas for what I now use.

1. Heat the frying pan before adding anything (very important. I also do this with my wok).

2. Add about a tablespoon of oil and swirl around to coat the sides (be careful that it doesn't drip and cause a fire!).

3. Add the eggs before the oil gets too hot (I don't know if this changes anything, but I do it.)

As you can see in the picture, the frying pan comes out so clean! I do not use non-stick pans, so this is a big deal for me!

4. Uh, oh, there will be some egg stuck to the sides where the oil didn't get high enough...

Sea salt!

Just sprinkle some sea salt in your pan while washing (dump out any standing water first) and it will get those pesky egg flakes right off! You can use this when scrubbing other difficult things.

What is your method of cooking eggs to avoid a mess? Do you have a pan scrubbing tip?

P.S. To my dismay I accidently ended my record of one or more blog posts per week since January. :( Boo hoo! I was out of town and completely forgot. Oh well! Time to work on beating my old record...

Life in May

Matt graduates this month! I can hardly believe it. He is finishing his last-ever choir trip today. I can't say how happy that makes me! Choir trips have felt like the bane of my happiness. I have so much respect for single parents/parents with spouses who travel/are in the military.

The kids are doing great! Katherine is talking more and Daniel is crawling all over the place. He knows the word "clap" and will do it when I ask. So cute! My uncle is getting married this coming weekend. I am super excited to see my extended family. I haven't seen my dear cousins in ages.

I finally figured out a use for this vintage dress I have had. I love the floral print, but it doesn't fit me very well as a dress- it is just too tight. I was going through my closet last night (a job I have been meaning to do for ages, I decided to do at midnight. Crazy.) and thought I would try wearing it as a shirt. Whoo hoo, it worked! It now may be my favorite "shirt." I am now thinking about cutting it up and hemming it to shirt length. It utterly pains me to cut into vintage clothing when it is very old. I wouldn't bat an eye lash at cutting up something from the 80's or 90's but, this- this is older than that. It must be my historian side coming out.

I have been trying to learn the penny whistle. Ah, it is a battle! I have gone too long without an instrument and seriously have to work on my timing/music reading.

Intsagram for Android! Like Christmas!
Little Buddy had some fun with a bagpipe chanter. Since Matt and I are playing all the time, they like to as well. Sometimes Katherine cries when I play. I don't blame her. I can sound pretty bad.

We move again in a few weeks!

Detachable lace collars

I made these lace Peter Pan collars today. Well, in all fairness I had purchased the lace collars themselves, but not in a finished state. I had to do a good amount of my own snipping, sewing and crocheting to get them wearable.

I love the vintage button.

Fairy Tales

I just found this darling video, this morning, on The Daybook. It is narrated and acted by children.

BTW, isn't that playhouse amazing?!
